UPDATE: Scole residents given all clear after water safety concerns addressed

Scole residents have been cleared to safely use the village’s water supply again, after safety concerns arose last week which resulted in a temporary school closure.

Issues were first observed on Tuesday, October 6, when Scole Primary School reported a total drop in water pressure, causing it to close early that day and then stay shut through Wednesday, October 7.

Villagers were then contacted last Friday by Anglian Water, instructing them to boil their tap water and leave it to cool before using it for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth, following test results which determined the water “may not be up to its usual high standards.”

The boil notice has now been lifted, with the water company confirming households could use water normally again, after it had worked to flush the system in order to improve the water quality.

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “We have been working 24/7 to get things back to normal as quickly as possible. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused, but customers’ health and wellbeing must come first.”

The company added it had been delivering bottled water to the locals for their convenience, and it praised the school for its help in the matter.

“The school has been extremely cooperative, for which we are very grateful, and we would like to take the time to thank them. We will be looking at what we can offer them specifically as a gesture of our thanks,” a statement issued this afternoon read.

However, one Scole resident, who did not wish to be named, claimed he and several of his neighbours were frustrated by the very sudden notice and a perceived lack of clarity over what the exact issue was, stating he had found the initial telephone message from Anglian Water reporting the situation to be “unclear”.

The resident, who lives in Ransome Avenue, near to the primary school, told the Diss Express yesterday: “It’s very worrying for anyone with young children.

“We all understand that these things happen, but we have not had any inkling of what has happened.

“We all pay good money to Anglian Water, so when there is a problem, we expect it to be dealt with in a professional way.”
