Diss artist with unique painting style raises money for young people
An artist with an unusual painting technique is raffling off one of his recent pieces of work to raise money for a support group.
Sam James, 22, from Uplands Way in Diss, paints by holding the brush in his mouth after being paralysed in a swimming accident three years ago.
He has since produced numerous works of art, and is raffling one of his recent creations to raise money for a mental health support
group for young people called Nature and Nurture.
Mr James said: “I raised some money for Beers Bikes and Bands at Burston Crown last year by auctioning a piece and I wanted to do something again this year.
“I’ve always enjoyed art, but since my accident took other things away from me I’ve had more time for painting, and I’ve had more need for it to bring that escape.”
He continued: “ I’ll paint anything really, and I’ve done everything from landscapes to tanks and cars. Vehicles and nature are what I enjoy painting most.”
Two of his paintings sold for a total of £2,000 recently at auction, and the current price for tickets to his raffle is £2.50 for one ticket or £10 for five.
Despite being interested in art for a long time, Mr James has never had any painting lessons or watched any videos and is completely self taught.
“I like a challenge and to be able to stand back and be proud of something I’ve done,” he said.
“For the small cost of a piece of my time, I can paint something that creates money for people who need it. Everyone has been good to me and they raised money for me when I was in hospital, so, time to return the favour.
“More than ever, mental health will be important after lockdown and charities still need to raise money despite everyone being at home, so I wanted to do my bit.”
