Diss lights switch-on set to signal start of countdown to big day

The stars will once again come out when Diss celebrates the advent of Christmas with one of the most-anticipated events in the town calendar.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend this year’s Christmas lights switch-on, which will take place in the town on Saturday, December 7.

Running from midday to 6.30pm, expect live music, entertainment, family fun, tasty treats and, of course, the big man himself, Father Christmas.

Mere’s Mouth will host a mini-fun fair, while the United Reformed Church, in Mere Street, will welcome visitors to a free All About Light interactive display.

The church will also feature a grotto, where, for £3, children will be able to meet Santa and receive a special gift, between 1.30pm and 5pm.

Again in the church, children’s entertainer Poz will keep families entertained with a free Punch and Judy show. Performances will run at 2pm and 3.30pm.

The main stage of the event, situated in the Market Place, will see Park Radio kicking off the music from 2.30pm.

Acts will include The Salvation Army, Voice Squad, Will Power, Serena Grant and The X Factor singer Leon Mallett.

Father Christmas will travel with a parade on Bressingham Steam Museum’s vintage fire engine, making his way along Mere Street from 5.40pm.

He will be joined by his elves, the cast of The Corn Hall’s pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, Parky Bear, the mayor and his cadets, who will make their way to the stage for the big switch-on at 6pm.
