Funding confirmed for new West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds

Funding has been confirmed to build a new West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.

Bosses at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust have received confirmation of the capital allocation of between £1bn to £1.5bn for the new facility.

The new hospital will be built at the Hardwick Manor site, next to the existing facility in Hardwick Lane, with construction due to begin between 2027 to 2028.

The new-build is needed as the current hospital was built in the 1970s and has defects associated with RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete).

Dr Ewen Cameron, chief executive of West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We welcome the confirmation of a capital allocation for our new hospital.

“This provides much-needed certainty and is a significant investment in the future of healthcare for our community.

“We appreciate the government’s commitment to delivering modern, high-quality hospital facilities across the country, and we remain committed to working collaboratively to deliver the best possible outcome for patients, staff, and the wider region.

“We’re engaging with our partners, stakeholders, and government to ensure we deliver a hospital that meets the needs of patients and staff, both now and for generations to come.

“Our priority remains to provide the best possible care, and we are committed to working transparently and collaboratively to achieve this.”
