Walcot Green overnight theft sees set of wooden gates stolen from driveway
A homeowner has been left with a £1,500 bill to replace a set of custom-made wooden gates after they were stolen.
Al Rainey, of Walcot Green in Diss, had the bespoke Iroko gates installed at his home when he and his wife moved in 18 months ago to keep his dog safe from a nearby road.
The 66-year-old said: “We heard a faint noise at around 9pm or 10pm on Sunday but didn’t think too much of it, and our view of the gates from the house would have been obscured.
“The gates were put on with two supporting pins and a loop that fitted over them, so they wouldn’t have needed tools to take them off, but they’d have to either be strong or have help to lift them off and load them into a truck or van.
“The police have been informed and we had a lady get in touch to say she saw a white van parked at the other end of Walcot Green at around 9.25am, but it could be unrelated and, other than that, we don’t have much to go on.
“It’s a quiet, calm area and you certainly don’t expect to wake up in the morning to find this sort of thing.
“We’ve never had anything like this happen before, and it’s quite disturbing to think someone could just turn up and take something so huge from the end of your driveway.”
A spokesman for Norfolk Police said: “We are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen anything or heard anything on Sunday, between 7.30pm and 11.30pm, or anyone who has information about this incident, to come forward.”
Anyone with any information should contact Norfolk Police on 101, quoting crime reference number 36/2059/20.
