Eye care come resident Suza Dickson has tennis dream fulfilled
A resident of an Eye care home who dreamed of playing tennis again has picked up a racquet for the first time in five years.
Suza Dickson, 80, was given an ace afternoon, courtesy of Hartismere Place, on Castleton Way.
On the day, residents gathered in the home’s café, sipped Pimms, chomped on strawberries and cream and turned the home into a mini tennis court.
Staff acted as umpires while Suza and her fellow residents played against each other.
Suza, who was a member of Wortham Tennis Club for 30 years and played until age 75, said: “It was great fun picking up a racket and playing tennis again. I couldn't believe I could play so well still.”
After the match, Suza hung her wish on the home’s wishing tree, a scheme which enabled residents to relive old hobbies and passions.
Suza said some of her favourite tennis memories were watching Wimbledon and cheering for her favourite player, Tim Henman.
Claire Martin, home manager at Hartismere Place, said “We were absolutely delighted to help make Suza’s wish come true.
“Seeing her light up while picking up a racket again was incredibly special.
“Our Wishing Tree initiative is a wonderful way for residents to share their dreams and interests, and it’s so rewarding to bring these moments to life. Making wishes come true is all part of the service at Care UK.
“Suza has had a lifelong love of tennis so recreating that experience meant the world to her. It wasn’t just about the tennis, it was about rekindling cherished memories, enjoying the social atmosphere, and feeling the excitement of the sport once more.”
