Diss supermarket giant builds bonds with community through two-person team of champions
A supermarket double-act have been tasked with completing good deeds within their community as they strive to support the elderly, people who may be vulnerable and schools.
The two-person community champions team at Morrisons in Diss was set up last month to help engage with the community as much as current safety regulations allow.
It delivers food to those who are elderly, vulnerable or shielding, drops off items for charities and has built a display in store which is decorated with messages and pictures put together by children.
The initiative is being undertaken by colleagues Amanda Guy and Avril Dann.
Mrs Guy, from Winfarthing, has been working for Morrisons for two years.
The 53-year-old said: “We have a lot planned for the coming months, but recently we’ve been donating plants, food, duvet sets and towels to the Homeless Association and helping with food deliveries for the elderly within a 10 to 15-mile radius, free of charge, even if it’s just a handful of items.
“We also go to nursing homes to drop off free doughnuts and cake and we’re hoping to build a close relationship with local schools once it is safe to do so.
“The children of Morrisons workers recently decorated our store’s display board for Remembrance Day and we hope to soon have schools creating pictures and messages, in keeping with a monthly theme.
“Once it’s safe, we also plan to run educational supermarket tours for children to help them learn about food and how supermarkets work.”
The team has a budget from Morrisons each month to invest in community drives, as 24-year-old Miss Dann, from Harleston, explained: “The board we have in store keeps us engaged with schools and residents, bringing those community bonds in to the store.
“Doorstep deliveries are so important as we make friends with those who need regular help. We try to best to spread a little positivity.”
