Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker and Bay City Rollers founder Nobby Clark back showbiz friends in this year’s Bury St Edmunds Race For Life

Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker has been helping two friends raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Martin Weavers, 63, from Wortham, and his friend, Patrick Mortimer, 62, are taking on Race for Life in Bury St Edmunds today.

In the 1990s, the pair formed a comedy act, Martin & Moore, and appeared on primetime TV shows, such as Des O’Connor and Michael Barrymore.

Two years ago, Mr Weavers was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, while Mr Mortimer has suffered two heart attacks.

It prompted the two friends to set up a podcast, called Who’s Tom & Dick, which is Cockney rhyming slang for ‘who is sick’.

Now, 1981 Eurovision winner and TV presenter Cheryl Baker, who appeared on the show, has wished them the best of luck for their fundraising efforts and sent them a good luck video ahead of the race.

Mr Weavers said: “The response to our podcast and our Race for Life entry has been phenomenal and we are absolutely delighted to have Cheryl’s backing. It’s so important we raise awareness and vital funds to help save lives.”

Along with Cheryl, Nobby Clark, founder member of 1970s teen idol band the Bay City Rollers, also sent a good luck message after listening to their podcast.

The comedian was refereeing a football match when he became breathless in February 2022. He was diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma, which is treatable but not curable.

Mr Weavers, who is married to Lynnie, 53, said he had his wife to thank for all her support. He was told there is a one in 6,000 chance of getting his form of the disease.

“It will feel like a magical moment when I cross the finish line with Patrick,” he said.

Mr Mortimer, a former comedy hypnotist, added: “We’ve been friends for more than 30 years and that means standing by Martin through the good and bad times.

“When we’re together, we just can’t stop joking and laughing.”
