Stonham business offers a second year of sponsorship to star cyclist

A young cyclist with a need for speed is targeting a big future in the sport after seeing a local business agree to renew her sponsorship deal.

Abbey Thompson, from Crowfield on the outskirts of Stonham Aspal, was first offered a sponsorship package by Stonham Barns Park last year after park owner Alan Forward saw her competing in a 120-mile race from Stratford to Dunwich.

Abbey, who is already a national time trial champion in her age group, raised £2,500 for Great Ormond Street Hospital, which treated her brother as a baby, during the race.

With 81 race wins to her name already, the 11-year-old, who started competing at the age of seven, hopes to one day be crowned world champion.

She said: “One day, I would like to be a professional cyclist and win a world title.

“I love speed and, if I have a difficult start, I love to chase. It’s the challenge that makes it fun.”
