Attleborough's Keith Martin stands down after 40 years of Breckland service
A community stalwart has decided not to stand in the upcoming elections, having given 40 years of service to the Breckland area.
Keith Martin first joined Attleborough Town Council in 1983, and spent 20 years serving the town council, before spending a further 20 years on Breckland District Council.
He will relinquish his district council position ahead of this year’s elections in May
The 79-year-old, of Edenside Drive in Attleborough, was given a good send off by his fellow councillors.
“Someone said I would be a hard act to follow, which was very nice to hear,” said Mr Martin.
“From now on, I’ll just be a member of the public, but I’m still behind Attleborough, as I always have been.”
Reflecting on his time representing the community, Mr Martin, who intends to spend more time gardening and watching his grandsons play football for Attleborough Town, said he hoped he had made a difference.
“I’d like to think I’ve left a legacy during,” he said. “I served as chairman of Attleborough Town Council and later as mayor.
“I’ve always been committed to this community. One project which stands out during my time is The Lighthouse Centre in Halford Road, which is a great community asset.
“I’m proud of everything I’ve helped with, including through my building business, which took on the renovation of the town hall.
“But I’m happy to step back now and take care of my partner, because that’s the most important thing,” added Mr Martin, who has three daughters, six grandchildren and a great grandson.
