Four fire crews were deployed to a suspected small aircraft crash in Pottergate Street earlier today — but it was a false alarm.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a crash at 3.50pm, and deployed appliances from Long Stratton, Carrow, and two from Hethersett.

But it was in fact a large bonfire which had sparked the false alarm.

A spokesperson for the fire service said thick black smoke could be seen from the Tivetshall St Margaret area.

The crews arrived at the scene at 4.16pm. The ambulance service was also informed.
