TW Gaze in Diss sees Sir Alf Ramsay 1966 and 1970 World Cup documents go under the hammer for £17,000

An online bidder has won a suitcase – containing manuscripts, letters and documents from a world-cup winning and former Ipswich Town FC manager – at a Diss auction house for just over £17,000.

The case, which went under the hammer at TW Gaze in Roydon Road, contains an archive of material which belonged to Sir Alf Ramsey and relates to his tenure as the manager of the England football team for the FIFA World Cups in 1966 and 1970.

Robert Henshilwood, a book expert who managed the sale, said he was delighted with the result.

He added: “The online buyer was up against people in the room and telephone bids from across the world.

“The buyer is UK based, and we are pleased that this important football history will remain in this country to be enjoyed.”

Documents from the 1966 World Cup, where England beat West Germany 4-2 to lift the trophy, included a letter signed from the then Manchester United boss Sir Matt Busby, as well as scout reports on teams talking about legends such as Portugal’s Eusebio and West Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.
