Search for mature ladies to star in classic comedy

The producers of the hit touring comedy and West End smash The Ladykillers, which will be on stage at Norwich Theatre Royal from March 4 to 9, have launched an unusual appeal.

They are looking for some local volunteer ‘old ladies’ to appear as extras in the show.

They will get to star opposite an all-star cast including Michele Dotrice (Some Mothers Do Ave Em), Cliff Parisi (Call The Midwife and EastEnders), and Clive Mantle (Casualty and The Vicar Of Dibley).

The extras will star in scenes towards the end of Act One and the beginning of Act Two playing friends of Mrs Wilberforce who head to her house to listen to a concert.

Those applying do not need to have any previous stage experience but they will need to be available to take part in all performances, plus a rehearsal and costume fitting from noon on March 4.

The producers have specified that performers are 55-plus and dress size 8-14, and they should apply by attaching a recent photograph and emailing to The closing date is February 18.

The production is written by Norwich-based comedy writer Graham Linehan who is best known for penning Father Ted. It follows a battle of wits between little old lady Mrs Wilberforce and a criminal gang posing as musicians who take over her house while planning a heist.

John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “The opportunity to star in a hit touring show like this does not come along very often, particularly for those of slightly maturer years. So if you, or someone you know, would like the chance to tread the boards here, get in touch with the production team right now.”

The Ladykillers runs from March 4-9 at 7.30pm with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Tickets cost £5.50-£23.50 from the box office on 01603 630000. For more information see
