Residents call for action on A1066 between Diss and Thetford after crash seriously injures motorcyclist
People who live on the A1066 are calling for greater action to prevent motorists from using it like a race track.
The appeal comes after a motorcyclist sustained serious injuries in a collision this week – the latest in a long line of accidents.
Sunday’s crash happened on a stretch of the road in South Lopham, when a blue Volvo V40 and an orange Triumph motorbike collided at the junction with Redgrave Road.
Emergency services attended the scene and the motorcyclist, a man aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Steve Zom, who lives just outside the village, said something needed to be done.
“It is basically a race track most days, especially on Sundays and in the evenings,” he said. “We have asked for the speed limit to be reduced just before the village and as you head out towards Garboldisham, but I guess it’s too expensive.”
Philip Denney, who lives in Roydon echoed these thoughts, saying that the 30mph zone near him was often exceeded, while Camilla Horsfell, from Riddlesworth, called the road dangerous.
“I have plenty of gruesome death stories from here over the years,” she said. “My main bugbear is that this seems to be the only A road in the area that does not have cameras on it.
“It needs cameras that monitor average speeds in key points around Shadwell and Riddlesworth, and then fixed speed cameras in the villages to slow vehicles down.
“I have been told that we can’t have a speed camera on this road as not enough personal injury claims have been made, but people are dying in accidents on this road.
“In the past year, there have been three fatalities between Garboldisham and Rushford. It is just too much.
“I would love to see more pressure put on the powers that be to have the speed reduced and then enforced.”
Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed Sunday’s collision, or who has any relevant dash-cam footage, to contact them on 101, quoting the accident reference number NC-14072024-338.
