Greater Anglia named Passenger Operator of the Year at National Rail Awards 2025

The region’s rail operator once again received top recognition at a national ceremony.

Greater Anglia was named Passenger Operator of the Year at the National Rail Awards 2025 – the second year running the company received the accolade and the third time in four years, having won the award in 2022 and 2024.

Judges said the firm was at ‘the top of its game’ but had also not ‘rested on its laurels’, with its series of initiatives to improve customer experience and drive organic growth praised.

Greater Anglia was also highly commended in the Small Station of the Year category for Bures railway station, while it was a finalist in the same category for Chappel and Wakes Colne.

In the Great Place to Work category, Greater Anglia was again highly commended. Bury St Edmunds railway station was a finalist in the Medium Station of the Year category.

Martin Beable, managing director, said: “Everyone at Greater Anglia is really proud to have won the Passenger Operator of the Year award for the second year running and third time in four years.

“All across our company, colleagues are passionate about doing their best for the customers and communities we serve.

“With excellent performance, a commitment to customer service, high quality new trains, and effective partnerships with other rail industry organisations and wider stakeholders, we’re fully focused on maintaining our high standards.

Greater Anglia has been the most punctual operator in the nation since April 2023, with annual performance currently at 93 per cent using both the long-standing public performance measure, which measures arrival at destination within 5 minutes, and 92.8 per cent using the more demanding ‘Time to 3’ metric, which measures arrivals of every train at every station it serves.

In recent years the company has transformed travel across its network, replacing its entire fleet for more up-to-date trains which have Wi-Fi, plug points USB points, air conditioning and improved accessibility.

These includes the Class 720, the Class 745 and the Class 755, the latter of which took local diesel services to replace dated rolling stock.

Other recognition Greater Anglia has scooped this year includes the Rail Operator of the Year prize at the Spotlight Rail Awards, the Train Operator of the Year award at the Rail Business Awards, a Golden Spanner award for the excellent performance of its bi-mode trains and three Golden Whistles awards for its high standards of punctuality and reliability.
