Redgrave ice cream man gifts restored van to 103-year-old driver
What’s the best possible present for 103-year-old retired ice-cream seller? His own ice-cream van, of course.
Gary Sutton, an ice-cream van collector, from Redgrave, has helped the family of Cambridge man Giovanni Rozzo to do just that. Mr Rozzo was already a media celebrity for being at least one of the oldest drivers in Britain.
This week he was in the news again after Mr Sutton delivered the van he had rebuilt, just like the one Mr Rozzo had when he began his business in the 1960s. He only retired when he was 82 and still drives his car daily.
Mr Sutton, who is also an ice-cream seller, said: “He loves the van and cried when I took it to his home. He’s marvellous. He looks after himself, doesn’t take tablets or wear glasses.”
Mr Sutton’s collection includes three of the once-familiar Bunshi vans which have now disappeared from the streets of Diss and the region.
