Harleston was ablaze when the illuminations on more than 70 Christmas trees lit up on Saturday.
The big switch-on was performed by prolific fundraiser Marion Courtney. Recently seen having her head shaved in aid of Syrian refugees, 90-year-old Marion was supported by hotelier Robin Twigge who had swapped the high heels and hotpants he wore for his take-off of the “You’re So Money Supermarket” advertisement to play the Christmas Fairy
As well as the town’s main Christmas tree and the lights on the Clock Tower, there are illuminated trees all around the town centre thanks to the Town Council, Nicky Stainton, chair of the Harleston Future events group.
“They all came on on cue and look lovely,” she added.
Other highlights at the switch-on ceremony were carols and Christmas songs from Harleston Players in Victorian costume, and performances from Diss Discord singing group, the Snowball Sprites and the Ukelele Elves. At St John’s Church a Christmas bazaar was busy and excited youngsters visited Santa in his grotto at Harleston Information Plus.
“Harleston’s Future, which organised the event with the Town Council, was assisted by many local volunteers and we are hugely grateful for their help. We estimate that at least 2500 people came to the town for these events,” Ms Stainton added.
