Parish sympathy for post office closure
A parish council in south Norfolk says it is saddened but sympathetic to the loss of its village post office following planning approval to convert the building into a home.
The Hallowing Lane post office and shop in Great Moulton is set to close and turn into a home with two adjoining garages, after obtaining planning permission at a South Norfolk Council meeting earlier this month.
Co-owner Christine Wheal told the planning committee she and her husband had attempted to sell the property on without success and had to shut down due to a combination of poor health and ailing finances.
John Davies, Great Moulton Parish Council Clerk, said: “The Parish Council is obviously sad that the village shop is to close, it has been a mainstay of the village for many years.
“However, it has every sympathy with Mr and Mrs Wheal’s position and realises that in the present circumstances this was their only option.
“The Parish Council would like to record its appreciation of all the hard work and support for the village that Mr and Mrs Wheal have contributed over the years.”
Mr Davies also confirmed that the council does not currently have any plans in place for a replacement post office, but would continue to keep the matter under review.
