An outline plan for up to 280 homes and a 60-bed care home on Eye Airfield has been approved.
Planning and development consultancy Pegasus submitted the plans, for land at Eye Airfield off Castleton Way, back in October 2015.
The plan is approved in outline only which means certain matters, including how much money will be given to infrastructure like schools and roads, called a section 106 agreement, will take place when a full planning application is made. Twenty percent of the site will be for affordable homes.
Planning officers at Mid Suffolk District Council had recommended approval of the application, while Eye Town Council believed the plan should be rejected. At an extraordinary meeting of Eye Town Council last year to discuss the plan, all 13 councillors present voted against the proposal.
And on the online planning portal of Mid Suffolk District Council, of 44 public comments, 39 object, four are neutral, while one is in support.
