McColl's branch in Diss announces closing date

A newsagent has announced its official closing date.

McColl’s in Mere Street, Diss, will cease operating on November 15, having decided not to renew its lease.

Back in June, when the newsagent first announced its intention to close the store, a spokesman told the Diss Express: “Having explored all options, regretfully, we have taken the difficult decision not to renew the lease in Mere Street.

“We are saddened to no longer be operating the store in the future and our priority is to support all affected colleagues.”

The store was one of the last remaining shops offering newspaper deliveries.

Many traders on the high street greeted the news with shock and dismay, expressing concerns that Diss could end up a “ghost town”.

Traders believe that, in order to reverse the decline in footfall, the town centre needs to be improved, along with changes in parking charges and lower rents.
