The owner of a new nightclub opening in the Diss Business Park next month says he is hopeful the venue can help ‘put Diss on the map’ and yield positive knock-on effects for the town.

Paul Downing is setting up Hoppers Nightclub and Bar, a pop-up style venue aiming to host one night each month, at the former site of the Italian Job pizza restaurant on Hopper Way, with the intention of making it ‘a destination’ unlike anything else currently in the area.

Mr Downing, who has previously held management roles at Club M in Newmarket and Summit Nightclub in Wisbech, told the Diss Express: “I saw it as a perfect location with plenty of parking and away from residential as much as possible, which is particularly difficult in Diss.

“I’m hoping we will bring a lot of positives to the town.”

The club has booked actor Danny Mac, better known as Dodger from television soap Hollyoaks, as the special guest for the opening night on Saturday, October 17, and is utilising its proximity to the town’s railway station to bring in visitors from as far as Norwich and Stowmarket.

The venue plans to welcome other celebrities on each successive night, with a cast member from Geordie Shore lined up to be the guest DJ in November.

Explaining the thinking behind the pop-up club format, Mr Downing stated: “I want the nights to be a success, but I don’t want to open every Friday or Saturday night and it only be half full.”

He added he was keen to secure the support of townspeople, having set up in the business park to avoid issues of noise disturbance, and estimated the club would provide around 20 part-time jobs for local residents.

“The last thing I want to do is create a headache for myself or for anyone else,” he said.

“This is being financed independently. We are not a big chain, so it is a risk.

“I’m just looking forward to opening our doors and receiving the support of the people of Diss.”

One comment on the club’s Facebook page reads: “I think they have chosen an ideal spot for a nightclub I’m looking forward to some nights out at a decent venue..hope it lasts and wish them good luck”.

Hoppers Nightclub is open from 8pm until 2am on its first night in October, with further dates to be announced soon.
