Birth of daughter inspires Diss cake business Mumma Bakes
Inspired by the birth of her daughter, a Diss mother started up her own cake business – and has been amazed by the results.
Tanita Russell has gone from baking the odd brownie here and there to producing impressive and extravagant wedding and birthday cakes on a regular basis.
The 29-year-old says her business, Mumma Bakes, only really kicked off after her daughter Brooke was born.
“When I got pregnant, I wanted to be the mum that she brings her friends home to because I make the best cookies or brownies,” said Tanita, who works at Midwich.
“I then made a cake for my partner, in the shape of a car and that was closely followed by another friend’s birthday cake and it really went from there.”
Mumma Bakes offers cakes for every occasion, with chocolate cakes and Tanita’s signature Victoria sponge among the favourites.
“I’ve never done the exact same cake twice, it’s either a different colour or a different style,” said Tanita, a former Diss High School student.
“I try to capture a person’s personality within that cake.”
Speaking of trends, she observed that a lot of people have moved away from traditional iced cakes.
“I still do a few of those but more popular are the semi-naked cakes, the ones with barely any icing and a rustic and natural look,” said Tanita.
“These are probably my favourite to do as well, because I get to use fresh flowers.”
Depending on the customer’s request, Tanita offers cakes at a price from £50 to £90 and the mum-of-one is currently looking into getting involved with wedding fairs.
“What I like best is starting out with however many sponges to then have people see their cake for the first time and being a little blown away,” said Tanita, who buys her tools from Clare’s Sweetie Shop at Norfolk House in Diss.
“But what makes a good cake is the people you are sharing it with. That’s really cheesy isn’t it?”
