A Diss man is looking forward to his third stint working in Mere Street after opening up a new home improvements showroom.

Gavin Barson, 43, has lived in Diss since he was 12 years old.

His mum and dad, Jackie and the late John Barson, previously ran the Paperchain newsagents in Mere Street, where Gavin started his career straight from school.

He went on to manage the store for eight years before joining Hemstock’s Jewellers. After then working for Multiyork in Mellis, he joined Frames Conservatories Direct, a home-improvement service, based in Bury St Edmunds.

Now, after running mobile exhibition unit for the company at Diss market every Friday, he is to manage the company’s new showroom, at 36 Mere Street, and where he is also a design consultant.

“It’s a real homecoming and great to be back working in Mere Street again, for what will be the third time,” said father-of-two Gavin.

Frames Conservatories Direct having been looking to open a showroom in Diss for the last year after Gavin built up a large customer base with his market stand.

The company was founded in Ixworth in 2001 and work includes conservatories, windows, doors, orangeries and extensions. Diss is the company’s third showroom with the other two in Bury St Edmunds and Ely.

“It’s a family-run company,” added Gavin. “We always look for ways to become part of the community and are open to ideas how that can be done."
