Men arrested as £250k of equipment seized in four-counties police operation in Halstead, North Essex

Two men have been arrested following a series of commercial burglaries across four counties, including Norfolk and Suffolk, as equipment worth more than £250,000 has been seized.

On December 20, officers from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire executed a warrant at a business park, near Halstead in north Essex.

A 21-year-old man and a 51-year-old man, both from the Witham area in Essex, were arrested and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre following a large police operation involving more than 50 officers and staff.

Over several months, multiple offences across the four counties have been investigated.

Large amounts of equipment has now been seized — including plant machinery, bowsers, generators and trailers.

Inspector Andy Beeby, of Suffolk Police and who briefed officers for this operation, said: “This was an incredibly successful cross-border operation, which required collaboration with all our neighbouring forces of Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire.

“I am grateful for their assistance on the day, along with Datatag and the National Construction and Agricultural Theft Team (NCATT), which has enabled us to seize numerous items of suspected stolen equipment, which we will now work on getting back to their rightful owners.

“The burglaries we are investigating have caused huge financial harm to the businesses concerned and our inquiries are ongoing.”

The men were arrested at the scene on suspicion of conspiracy to handle stolen goods.

The 21-year-old has been bailed until Thursday, March 20, and the 51-year-old was released under investigation, both pending further inquiries.
