MEMORY LANE: Names of team pictured in 1954 have us stumped
In the summer of 1954, when today’s picture was taken, England were playing a home Test series against Pakistan and, in the winter, were due to head to face old rivals Australia in an Ashes series.
This summer, of course, the Australians are here and, as it is day two of the first test today, a cricketing picture would seem appropriate for this week’s Memory Lane feature.
Pictured are 10 of the Scole and Thelveton team ... and all except one are in crisp cricketing whites, although it was not all that unusual back then to see some players in makeshift wear.
Nowadays, of course, you would not be allowed to cross the boundary rope unless you were dressed from top to toe in whites, although the professionals have been accused of playing in their pyjamas in limited-over matches.
We hope readers will come to our aid once more and supply the names of the players pictured, or their scorer, who is closely guarding the records of their matches.
