MEMORY LANE: Diss Denmark Arms pub outing stirs memories

Our Memory Lane picture of the 1940s Diss Denmark Arms pub outing stirred memories for Bob Fryer, whose dad Ted was the landlord.

His son wrote in to say: “The gentleman (right) described as looking unhappy is Dick Cattermole, father to Doris Shulver sitting on the right.”

Mr Fryer could also name the Coulson brothers, George Martin, George Wilby, Stanley Ruddock, Teddy Birch and Frank Wilby.

The picture also brought back good memories for Pauline Cowham, of Gislingham, whose grandfather was the serious-looking figure.

“Grandad always looked stern when his photo was taken, but I remember him as always being kind to me,” she said.
