MEMORY LANE: Curry’s once a Diss high street feature
When a shop in the lower part of Mere Street was being renovated recently to make way for the YMCA charity store, a Currys sign was briefly unveiled above the door.
The shop was once a Currys and the pictures show the renovations taking place to accommodate the new store.
Dennis Cross, Diss historian, who submitted the photo, said he was not certain when the photo was taken, but was likely to have been before the Second World War.
Currys remained in Diss for many years, and, along with Brames, was the main place for buying electrical goods like radios and televisions.
Mr Cross, who is a carpenter, said: “They (Currys) were always being broken into. I was often boarding up a window or repairing doors.”
Currys is still trading today, although not in Diss, with household electricals still their main business.
