At some point between midnight on Friday March 30 and 9.30am on Monday April 2, 2018, an unknown offender forced entry into Eye Town Hall in Broad Street and damaged a number of paintings.

A fire extinguisher was also set off causing further damage to antique furniture.

The incident happened shortly before the town hall was to be informally launched as a £170,000 revamp neared completion.

The four 19th Century pictures included a former mayor, and General Sir Edward Kerrison, who served as an MP for Eye and funded the building of the hall.

A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary on Thursday March 7 in the Cumbria area.

He was questioned and has been subsequently released under investigation pending further enquiries.
