Liz Truss pays tribute to David Amess MP after fatal stabbing
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has paid tribute to Sir David Amess MP after he was fatally stabbed earlier today.
Amess, 69, was stabbed in his Southend West constituency as he was conducting a constituency surgery at Belfriars Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.
Truss, who serves as an MP for South-West Norfolk, described her colleague as a "lovely, lovely man and a superb parliamentarian," less than an hour after news emerged of his passing.
She said: "Devastated to hear the terrible news about Sir David Amess MP. He was a lovely, lovely man and a superb parliamentarian.
"My thoughts are with all his family and friends."
Essex Police have confirmed that a 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, after they were called to the incident, in Eastwood Road North, at 12.05pm.
Amess had been receiving treatment at the scene, but died shortly after.
Essex Police also confirmed that they are not looking for anyone else.
