LETTER - ‘Stop feeding bread to Diss Mere birds’
I’ve noticed that people continue to feed bread to ducks and geese at Diss Mere despite the notices asking them not to do so.
I’ve never approached those people as I know they derive a lot of pleasure seeing their feathered friends squabbling over a few morsels of bread, but I was really alarmed the other day when I watched a lady bring two dustbin bags full of loaves of bread and proceed to unload them into the Mere apparently oblivious to the enormous harm this can do to the health of the very creatures they think they are helping, not to mention the damage to their habitat.
Another lady, questioning her activity, was told in no uncertain terms that the ducks and geese are hungry at this time of year and that nobody cares.
I can only assume the lady’s good intentions are based purely on ignorance about wildlife, but it is important that people have a better understanding of what they are doing when they feed food intended for humans to waterfowl.
