LETTER: ‘Appalling lack of safety sense’

I have read various ideas and frustrations and anger about traffic in Vinces Road trying to turn east or west onto Victoria Road.

I have been appalled at the suggestions so far.

Less than 20 years ago there were left and right filter lanes from Vinces onto Victoria Road using the road space that is available now.

The reason this was stopped was because it was very dangerous – traffic merging from two lanes onto Victoria Road was chaotic.

Please notice that the pavement on Victoria Road, opposite the garage, has been enlarged (not for extra pavement parking) because allowing right filter traffic and through traffic was too dangerous. These filter type lanes have all been removed along the A140 for the same reason.

The only solution left is to have traffic lights that operate on the same basis at the set at Sawmills Road. If there isn’t any traffic from Sawmills or turning right into Sawmills then the lights remain green on the main road. A left and right filter lane from Vinces is then quite safe.

The other benefit for a similar set of traffic lights is that Sawmills lights have pedestrian crossing lights also.

Crossing Vinces Road to get to the station is sometimes a game of Russian roulette. It is also a route used by school children daily on their journey to and from school – it would make it safer for them. The bus stop in front of the garage is used throughout the day and to reach it you have dash across Vinces Road or the station approach.

£6,000 on a ‘Jamcam’ – why not spend this on Christmas lights instead at least the residents would enjoy them or invest in traffic lights – the lorries who want to avoid a busy Victoria Road do they go via Palgrave? Do they negotiate the various residential and back roads in Diss to go under the railway bridge and come out at Sawmills Road? If they are delivering to a business in Vinces Road they haven’t a choice!

Vinces Road is important to Diss – lots of residents and businesses that employ local people, businesses that use local services, the railway station car park, and the ambulance station.

Surely investing the £6,000 towards traffic lights makes much more sense?
