Hundreds of youngsters in the Diss Express area have been celebrating another year of successful GCSE results.

Pupils in north Suffolk and south Norfolk made up some of the hundreds of thousands across the country who picked up their results yesterday.

Diss High School students enjoyed a 77 per cent attainment of A*-C grades, down slightly from 82 per cent last year, with 68 per cent of these grades including Maths and English.

Head of Year 11 Nicholas Widdeson said: “We are certainly delighted. This is a very hard-working year group and that has shown in the results papers today (Thursday).”

High achiever Chloe Garnham is going on to study Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Spanish at A-level after receiving two A*s, 9 As and 3 Bs.

She said: “I’m very pleased with my results. It’s gone a lot better than expected.”

Hartismere School celebrated an improvement on last year’s results, with 72 per cent attaining at least 5 A*-C grades, including English and Maths, up on last year’s 65 per cent figure. Headmaster James McAtear said: “These results are a testimony to the hard work of all our staff, governors and students and to the support given to them by their parents.”

Head girl Emily Goodwin, of Rickinghall, was one high-achiever at the school, scoring two A*s, six As and four Bs, and will continue on to sixth form at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham.

She told the Diss Express: “I’ve been so nervous. After all the hard work, I was really happy with my results. I’ve been really focused over the past few months and all of the teachers here gave loads of revision sessions and they supported us loads throughout our exams so that’s been really good.”

At Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, 83 per cent achieved five or more A*-C grades, with 71 per cent of those including English and Maths.

Headteacher Philip Hurst said: “This is a very pleasing set of results, demonstrating that the pupils make excellent progress in their time here. The results are very much in line with expectations.”

Archbishop Sancroft High School in Harleston achieved 70 per cent with five or more A*-C grades, 60 per cent of which included English and Maths.

Headteacher Richard Cranmer said: “We are absolutely delighted with the success of this year group. Not only have they achieved very well they have contributed enormously to the life of the school in so many different ways.”

Long Stratton High School enjoyed their third best-ever result. The number of pupils gaining at least five A*-C grades, including Maths and English, increased by three per cent on last year, to 65 per cent.

“We are delighted with the performance of the class of 2014 as again our students have posted an amazing set of results,” said headteacher John Wilson. “We wish the class of 2014 well and I know that they and their parents would join me in thanking their wonderful teachers and support staff. I am indebted to my staff and governors for their hard work over the last year.”

At Stradbroke High School, 56 per cent of pupils earned five A*-C grades, which includes Maths and English, while at Old Buckenham High School, 64 per cent gained five A*-C grades including Maths and English, while 72 per cent scored at least five A*-C grades.

Nationally, 68.8 per cent of GCSE entries attained A*-C grades, a slight rise of 0.7 per cent from last year’s results. Maths GCSEs scoring A*-C was 62.4 per cent, a year-on-year increase of 4.8 per cent, but the proportion of A*-C grades in English was just 61.7 per cent, a 1.9 per cent drop from last year.

Results from Attleborough Academy, Debenham High School and Framlingham College were not available at the time of going to press.
