Inquest concludes into death of Framlingham dad Jonathan Rose, who died in 2022 Tanzania plane crash
An inquest into the death of a Framlingham dad, who died in a plane crash in Tanzania nearly three years ago, has concluded.
Jonathan Rose, 46, was one of 19 people who died when an ATR 42-500 aircraft crashed on approach to Bukoba Airport on November 6, 2022.
The aircraft, operated by Precision Air Services Plc, had 43 people on board when it crashed into Lake Victoria. It was just 500 metres away from a runway.
Coroner Darren Stewart concluded that Jonathan died of asphyxia due to drowning at the conclusion of his inquest at Suffolk Coroner’s Court yesterday.
A preliminary report by the Tanzanian Aircraft Accident and Investigation Branch (TAAIB) attributed the crash to a sudden violent thunderstorms when the plane was just five minutes away from Bukoba.
Such bad weather is common at that time of the year and was known by pilots, it said.
The aircraft’s pilot chose to fly around the airport to wait out the bad weather and land.
Mr Stewart is considering raising concerns with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Mr Rose is survived by his wife Samantha and three children Sasha, Oliver and Alexandra.
Samantha said: “Jon was a wonderful husband and father, brother and son. He always made his family his first priority.
“My family and I are thankful to Mr Stewart for his thorough investigation, which has shed some light on what went wrong.
“We miss Jon every day but take comfort in the fact that the inquest has helped bring clarity and a sense of closure.”
Mr Rose’s family was represented by Sarah Stewart, from Stewarts.
Following the conclusion, she said: “The coroner’s inquiry has helped Jon’s family in coming to terms with their devastating loss, bringing them a measure of peace.”
