Block East Pye Solar Group has arranged an ‘awareness walk’ in Great Moulton on Sunday, as part of a national day of action
Hundreds of campaigners will unite this weekend to fight the ‘overwhelming’ influx of solar farm projects.
The Block East Pye Solar Group has arranged an ‘awareness walk’ in Great Moulton on Sunday.
It will see people take to the roads, bridlepaths and lanes around the village, many wearing red to show solidarity, carrying placards and displaying a four metre high mock-up solar panel, while playing the sound of substations from a broadcast van.
The campaign walk will last one hour and is designed to raise awareness of the Island Green Power plan for East Pye Solar Farm, on land close to Long Stratton.
This would mean solar panels clustered along the A140, running through a number of parishes, including Great Moulton, Hempnall, Wacton, Tasburgh, Tharston and Topcroft.
The Great Moulton campaigners are also concerned about another scheme by Field Energy for battery storage on land north of Carr Lane.
At the same time, around 25 other walks will be taking place across the country, inspired by the Block East Pye group campaign.
Campaigner Selina Westcott said: “We have held awareness walks locally already and they have grown from originally around 40 or 50 people to more than one hundred.
“Other groups from around the country have contacted us, and so we decided to co-ordinate nationally to promote a deeper understanding of what is happening and the threat it poses.
“The number of schemes proposed is just overwhelming.”
If successful, East Pye Solar Farm built, would generate 500 megawatts of energy – enough to power approximately 115,000 homes every year. It is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project.
Campaigners fear the loss of valuable rural land, including food production and water, disruption to businesses and private homes during both the construction and operation.
