The chief executive of Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has thanked staff after the trust was taken out of special measures following its latest inspection.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) visited the under-performing hospital between December and January and saw enough to remove the status, although inspectors still recorded a rating of requires improvement.

Sam Higginson said: “Our staff have worked incredibly hard, with skill and dedication, to continuously improve and develop services and are all delighted.

“This tireless dedication has now resulted in the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital being removed from special measures.”

Inspectors noted the hospital’s foundation trust had made significant investment in the site, including additional capacity, four new interventional radiology laboratories and a fourth cardiac catheter laboratory.

Although the hospital’s overall rating remains at requires improvement, the government watchdog did find that the trust’s effectiveness and safeguarding of patients had improved.

The inspector’s report gave ratings of outstanding to the trust’s “clear and enhanced commitment” to research within the organisation.

Its innovations in surgery, including the service development of intrabdominal chemotherapy, and its end-of-life care also received the highest rating.

Areas the CQC said the hospital must improve on to be in line with legal requirements included staff in urgent and emergency care, as well as outpatients, using better systems to record and store medicines safely.

Mr Higginson said: “We were very pleased that it recognised the sustained and significant improvements that our fantastic staff have achieved in patient care at NNUH.

“We thank our partners for all their support and we are now looking forward to the future with confidence and making even more progress on our journey to outstanding.”
