Gravity race at Grain Brewery in Alburgh has perfect first event

Speed-hungry racers hurtled down a hill in a host of crazy contraptions as a village held its first gravity race.

Ten entrants took part in the event, masterminded by Alburgh resident Bert Vermunt and hosted by Grain Brewery at the end of December, with villager Angus Taylor crowned eventual race champion.

Brewery owner Phil Hall said: “Bert and his friends got together at our tap room, wanted to do something fun and came up with the idea, so we helped to give it a home.

“We were amazed by how many people turned up, we expected about 30 to 40, but we had about 150 people come along to watch.

“The whole of the village turned out to see the racing and it was a great thing to do between those odd days between Christmas and the new year.

“Watching people go down a hill in some good, old-fashioned fun really captured the imagination and brought the whole community together.”
