A glider which struck power cables near a farm in Mickfield is thought to have caused a large field fire in the village yesterday afternoon, according to a Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.

The fire service was called just after 2pm yesterday to reports of a combine harvester on fire in a stubble field in Wetheringsett Road.

On arrival, the two fire crews initially dispatched found approximately ten acres of stubble well alight, close to a further 50 acres of standing crops.

A further two crews were requested to attend. The fire service used four hose reels and three beaters to fight the blaze, which was under control by 3.12pm.

A farmer was also on hand to assist firefighters, creating a fire break.

There were no reported injuries and an ambulance was not required.

The Environment Agency was also informed.
