Yaxley House Care Home hospitality manager George elated to complete River Waveney rowing machine challenge

A man has rowed the equivalent length of the River Waveney – from the confines of his parish church.

George Matthews spent nine hours on a rowing machine to clock up just shy of 60 miles.

The 27-year-old said the row – completed in the dry surroundings of St Mary’s Church in Yaxley – was one of the toughest challenges he had put his body through.

Speaking hours after finishing on May 29, the care home hospitality manager said he was both elated and exhausted.

“I am definitely not a rower myself, but I was able to put in about 30km a day in the run-up to the event.”

Mr Matthews took on the challenge to raise money for the church and Yaxley House Care Home.

“I wanted to do something that would raise the profile of the home, the church and Yaxley as a whole, ” he said.

“I’d like to thank everyone that has donated. We have around £500 so far, which will not only help the church but also our residents, which is great.”
