A former scriptwriter has released his own collection of short stories, based around loneliness and the day-to-day experiences of village life.

Forty years after setting out on a career as a writer – one which saw him work on hit programmes such as The Archers and children’s TV show Rainbow – Michael Bartlett has finally realised a lifelong dream of seeing his work published in print.

The Starston father-of-two has penned two books, My Village in the Valley and Personal Islands, incorporating the 75-year-old’s passions for comedy and drama, respectively – and were released by publisher Crumps Barn Studio on Wednesday last week.

My Village in the Valley is described as a classic comedy, in which an amiable narrator recounts the familiar niggles of life in a rural community, while Personal Islands strikes a thoughtful tone, exploring topics of loneliness and isolation.

Discussing the second book, Mr Bartlett, who lives in The Street, said: “I wrote these stories long before the current pandemic, but, in the light of recent events, they have taken on a new significance.”

Discussing his transition from television and radio to print, Mr Bartlett said: “The main difference between writing for radio and print is probably that a play is written for interpretation by a cast and director.

“The final production is a team effort, whereas a short story is a much more direct communication between the writer and the reader.”

My Village in the Valley and Personal Islands are available on Amazon or via all good book stores.
