Village football returns to Carleton Rode after 30 years

A village is hoping its first football team to take to the field in around 30 years could be the start of more in the future.

Carleton Rode Walking Football Team took to the village’s new 3G pitch for its first official friendly match against Waveney Pacemakers at the beginning of this month.

The players, who only came together as a team at the beginning of the year, wore a new kit sponsored by the village’s social club in the navy and red colours of the original Carleton Rode team, which folded in the early ‘80s.

Steve Race, the team’s coach, said: “It is a fantastic way to keep active and socialise and we are pleased to say that numbers have grown steadily in recent months.

“We are hoping this will be a stepping stone to more youth and pub teams in the village.”

The side, which meets weekly on Monday evenings between 6pm and 7pm, mainly comprises of those aged over 40.

The players are either recovering from injury, long-term health conditions or simply wishing to return to football.
