Public consultation on new Diss Community and Leisure Centre plans on former John Grose site takes place

More than 200 residents from in and around Diss have attended a public consultation on a new community and leisure centre in Diss.

The event, at Diss market on Friday, was the first in five consultations organised by South Norfolk Council to gather residents' views on the proposed new facilities.

The new £6 million centre which is being built by South Norfolk Council, will go onto the former John Grose site in Park Road, as it says it wants to improve its leisure offering in the town.

Initial plans include a gym, accessible toilets and changing facilities, a bookable community space for classes, a café and soft play area.

Councillor Kim Carsok, the council’s cabinet member for health and leisure, said: “Thank you to everyone who came along and contributed. We received some excellent feedback.

“This consultation is a valuable opportunity for us to understand how the community will use the centre and ensure we meet their needs.”

The multi-phase regeneration project for Diss, said to be in the region of £16 million, started with improvements to its swim centre in Victoria Road.

This included the removal of its gym, which has to be a part of the new leisure centre due to a stipulation in a £1.1 million grant awarded by the Greater Norwich Growth Board.

During the consultations, residents are being given the opportunity to view plans, drawings, and timelines, including early designs for the new facilities.

Alternatively, they can fill out the online survey, by clicking here, before May 30.

The dates for the next consultation events, where residents will get a chance to look at plans are as follows:

► Wednesday, April 30, between 12pm and 8pm, at the Corn Hall in St Nicholas Street

►Thursday, May 1, between 12pm and 6pm, at the Corn Hall in St Nicholas Street.

► Tuesday, May 6, and Wednesday, May 7, between 9am and 5pm, at the Octagon building in Mere Street.
