A nurse’s battle with cancer has spurred her family and friends to raise funds in her memory by travelling from Lands End to John O’Groats by moped.

It was a journey that Tina Pizzey, from Finningham, had always dreamed of completing herself.

But, after losing her fight against cancer in June last year, her loved ones decided to take on the challenge themselves.

Four members of Tina’s family will be taking part in the 1,400km journey in a bid to raise £10,000 in her memory. They will be travelling by 50cc mopeds.

Her husband Laurie, son Aaron, brother-in-law Ivor and nephew Finn will be making the trip.

Joined by a support vehicle, the riders will be starting on July 28, and will endeavour to reach their final destination on August 12.

“This trip has been organised because Tina had always wanted to go from Lands End to John O’Groats,” explained Maureen Pizzey, Tina’s mother-in-law.

“Tina died last year after a long and very brave battle with cancer.

“She was a lovely girl and is greatly missed by our family and her many friends.”

Tina studied nursing and gained her qualification in her late thirties.

After initially working in Hartismere Hospital, she worked in the oncology department at Ipswich Hospital.

Tina would come to rely on the department as she battled cancer.

She then made the move to work as a nurse at Mendlesham and Bacton health centres.

Mrs Pizzey added: “She was loved by the patients and respected by the staff.

“She was also interested in so many things, including knitting, sewing, weaving and she was a member of the Stowmarket Bee Keepers Association, having six hives.”

The trip is sponsored by Sackers Recycling in Claydon, where Tina’s husband, Laurie, works. The bikes have been serviced and prepared by Mototechniks of Stowmarket.
