Eye’s new mayor wants to focus on town’s youth
An Eye Town councillor who will be sworn in as the new mayor next month says his focus will be on young people.
Colin Ribchester, 68, who has served on and off on the authority for 20 years, will take over from Maria Ford at the Mayor’s Parade and Service on Sunday, June 5.
I think it is an achievement to become mayor, and I will try and get a lot of things done for Eye
Born in Accrington, he moved to the north Suffolk town 25 years ago and was instrumental in providing a skate park in 2007. He was commended with a civic award the following year.
And he said he hopes to provide further improvements in the town for the benefit of the younger generation.
“I think it is an achievement to become mayor, and I will try and get a lot of things done for Eye,” he said. “I feel good about it.
“When I first moved into Eye I was working in the shop and I got to know a lot of the people and the councillors, and I just thought I can make some difference .”
The father of three, who used to run the McColl’s store in the town, paid tribute to the departing Mrs Ford.
“She has done a splendid job. With everything she has had to do with mayor and running the entertainment committee, she has been great.”
