Diss scouts begin hard work to reach dream trip to world jamboree

More news, no ads

A trio from the 2nd Diss Scouts have been selected to take part in the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea next year – but to get there, the real work starts now.

Scouts Mae-Li Sun and George McCathie, both 13, and Leon Lui, 14, who is part of the group’s Explorer section, must each raise £3,800 to make it to the once-in-a-lifetime event.

If they are successful, they will join more than 40,000 scouts from 150 countries in the Saemangeum area, on the west coast of South Korea, where the jamboree will be held in the summer of 2023.

Mae-Li Sun, George McCathie and Leon Lui are hoping to make it to the 2023 world scouting event.

Mae-Li said: “I am half Cambodian, and Korean culture is very popular there, so I am super keen to actually visit South Korea and learn even more about it.

“I am also very keen to take part in the activities that we will do there and to have an impact on the world I am growing up in.”

The three kick off their fundraising campaign on Monday at the Salvation Army Community Centre – the scout group’s Sunnyside headquarters – with a Chinese new year celebration.

It will include authentic Chinese dumplings – made by Happy Palace takeaway owner Neal Liu – as well as a host of family-friendly activities. Entry is free to anyone who would like to attend, with donations encouraged for the food and games. The evening will run from 6pm to 9pm.

Other fundraising ideas include a pot luck food challenge night, where guests sign up and are tasked to eat whatever they are served, with a prize for the bravest diners; treasure hunts; and a sponsored event that will take 11 hours to complete – the time it takes to fly from Heathrow to South Korea.

The trio are also reaching out to businesses and organisations, as well as fundraising individually and as a team.
