A major Diss employer claiming to be one of Europe’s top clinical research specialists says it wants to continue its organic growth, after celebrating two decades since its foundation.

Syne Qua Non, which serves companies in the bio-tech and pharmaceutical sectors worldwide, turned 20 years old last Tuesday, having grown from operating out of a spare bedroom in Yaxley, to employing 90 full-time staff at its current site within the Diss Business Park.

While much of its business is done internationally, with involvement in clinical trials for treatments of cancer, asthma and dementia, Syne Qua Non co-director and founder Tony Rees says the company is proud that the majority of its employees are based in the local area.

“We have a lot of pride in what we have achieved and a lot of thanks to staff both past and present who have contributed to that success,” Mr Rees told the Diss Express.

“Without their quality input, we would not have been able to achieve what we have.

“It’s been rewarding but challenging, having worked through three recessions. To survive these was quite significant. We have a very strong and loyal client base and we get strong recommendations.”

The firm had its first offices in Mere Street and gradually expanded until a major project enabled it to move to the business park, located off Hopper Way.

It now specialises particularly in cancer research and claims to be ‘at the forefront’ of cell and gene studies.

Staff members held a gathering last week to commemorate the milestone, and will be organising a series of celebrations throughout the year, including a dinner and dance in the summer.

Mr Rees said one of his fondest memories of the past 20 years was visiting Buckingham Palace with co-director Karen Grover in 2009, in order to accept the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

He added the company would not rest on its laurels and intended to expand its services even further in the coming five to ten years, while also pledging to keep supporting local charities and community groups.

“We always continue to see organic growth in our key business,” he explained.

“We have plans to diversify our key offerings and work with companies to form partnerships around the world.”
