Diss church closed from noon onwards in holidays after “disruption”
A Diss church is closing early during the school holidays in a bid to deter “disruption” from young people.
St Mary’s Church, in Mount Street, is closing from noon each day during the Easter break after incidents in recent days.
Reverend Maggie Swayze, assistant priest at the church, said there had been no damage caused, and said since the notices had gone up, no similar incidents have taken place.
The grounds of the church remain open.
“We decided to close it just during the holidays,” she explained.
“One afternoon, Easter Sunday, a group were in their all afternoon, throwing kneelers around, and literally jumping over the pews which intimidates anybody who wants to come in and visitors.

“We really do not like closing.
“We like to have it open, particularly at this time of year when we normally get lots of visitors.
“We also did have problems with people coming into the church, especially in the winter as it is warmer in the building, bringing cans of drink in and things like that.
“The trouble is people do not tidy up after themselves.”
Revd Swayze, who has been involved with the church in various roles since 1983, added video had been recorded capturing the incidents of disruption at the church.
n What do you think? Have you been put off a visit to the church? Were they right to close early during the school holidays?
