Daredevil Joyce Bown is preparing to jump out of an aeroplane for her 90th birthday.

Joyce, who lives in Eye, will make the 1,500ft parachute jump on July 6, three days before her big day.

She had promised herself the same gift for her 80th birthday, but ill health meant she couldn't go ahead..

She will be raising money for St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich and has already collected around £600 in sponsorship and donations thanks to friends and an online fundraising page.

“A lot of people are surprised when I tell them what I am doing, but not so much those people who know me well,” said Joyce.

“I was a librarian before I retired, which doesn’t sound very adventurous, but I have travelled all over the world, including to Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Los Angels, New York and all over Europe. Often these were solo trips.”

Joyce will attempt a tandem parachute jump with an instructor at Beccles Airfield and has received the go-ahead from her GP.

“They have sent me some information and told me to wear something sensible, such as training shoes,” said the 89-year-old.

“I don’t have those so I’ll wear my walking boots. They will give me a jumpsuit and a helmet.

“Some days, I am looking forward to it. Other days, I wonder if perhaps I am being a bit foolhardy.

"But I am looking forward to it."
