Norfolk’s road network getting £12 million of new surface

An annual road surface dressing programme – aimed at reducing the number of potholes – has started across Norfolk, with hundreds of miles of surface set to be laid.

Norfolk County Council’s spring and summer project will see 320 miles of roads dressed to help prevent damage and extend their life, with a new skid-resistant surface to reduce the risk of accidents.

The programme, which began on Monday last week, will cost around £12 million and continue until September.

Grahame Bygrave, director of highways, transport and waste, said: “Maintaining our roads is key to enabling the Norfolk economy to both function and grow, as our highways are vital to every resident, business and visitor.”

This comes after the Government told councils in the East of England to prove their worth when it comes to tackling potholes in order to unlock £65 million of extra money.

From the middle of this month, local authorities will start to receive a share of the Government’s record £1.6 billion highway maintenance funding.

But to get the full amount, all councils in England must publish annual progress reports and prove public confidence in their work.

In the same year, the county council also achieved first place in a customer satisfaction survey run by National Highways.
