Breckland and Attleborough councillor, Steven Fraser, charged with criminal damage after broken shop window

A Conservative councillor has been charged with criminal damage over an early hours incident in which the window of a small business was broken.

Stephen Fraser was arrested after Richard Allington turned up to work at his Attleborough kitchen store and found his window smashed.

His arrest was on April 25 and he was later released on bail.

However, police have now confirmed he has been charged with the incident, which is said to have happened in the early hours of April 14.

He was also questioned by police on suspicion of theft after two A-boards from outside the nearby Griffin pub were taken on the same night.

However, he will face no further action relating to this.

A spokeswoman for Norfolk Police said: “On Tuesday night, Stephen Fraser, aged 52, of New North Road, Attleborough, was charged with criminal damage.

“He is due to appear before Norwich Magistrates’ Court on June 10.”

Mr Fraser, a father of three, first moved to Attleborough more than 20 years ago.

He was elected to Breckland Council, where he represents Burgh and Haverscroft ward, and Attleborough Town Council, in May 2023.

He ran as a non-political independent candidate but has since joined the Conservative group.

While campaigning to join the councils, he pledged to listen to locals and lobby for their needs and described himself as “motivated, active, and prepared to get [his] hands dirty.”

A spokeswoman for Norfolk Police said: “Police received a report at 9.42am on Monday 14 April that a window had been damaged overnight at a property on Connaught Road, Attleborough.

“Police received a separate report at 9.43am some signs had been taken overnight from outside a commercial premises on Church Street, Attleborough.”
