Coronavirus daily: We are very much in the woods says NHS medical director

The national medical director of NHS England has urged people to continue with the measures put in place by the government and says that he sees 'green shoots' of improvement due to them, despite the UK having the highest daily deaths rate from Covid-19 so far.

Dr Stephen Powis, at the daily government press conference, said: "We have had a rise in the number of UK cases, but recently we have had a bit of a plateau,

"It is early days, we're not out of the woods, we are very much in the woods, but it is very important we keep complying with those instructions."

Public Health England figures show that the total amount of UK cases is now at 25,150, with 381 deaths in the last 24-hour period.

England has now had 21,008 cases, Scotland 1,993, Wales 1,563 and Northern Ireland with 586.

Norfolk now has 148 confirmed cases, whereas Suffolk has 116.

Total deaths from the virus across the UK is now at 1,789.
